Deriving The Name “Princess Sophia”

The Princess Sophia was supposedly named for Princess Sophia of Prussia, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria and daughter to Emperor Frederick of Germany.

Sophia is also one of the lesser known royal names, borne mostly by Georgian Princesses.

Britain narrowly missed out on having a Queen Sophia when Electress Sophia of Hanover, died weeks before she would have become queen in 1714.

Timeline

The SS Princess Sophia was one of four sister ships built for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) between 1910 -11 which also included the Princess Adelaide, Princess Alice and Princess Mary.

Captain James William Troup was credited with conceiving and building the Princess Fleet which by 1913 numbered 12 ships.

The Princess Sophia was launched in 1911, but her maiden voyage was not until 1912, the same year as the Titanic’s maiden voyage.
